As the sun dipped behind the Marin Headlands, Amara and her father stood on the steps of Everett Middle School. "Look!" Amara said, her breath fogging in the cool San Francisco air. "It's almost gone! Are we seeing it disappear right now, this very second?" Her father smiled, adjusting the strap of her backpack on her shoulder. "That's a fantastic question, Amara, but the answer is a little strange."

As the sun dipped behind the Marin Headlands, Amara and her father stood on the steps of Everett Middle School. "Look!" Amara said, her breath fogging in the cool San Francisco air. "It's almost gone! Are we seeing it disappear right now, this very second?" Her father smiled, adjusting the strap of her backpack on her shoulder. "That's a fantastic question, Amara, but the answer is a little strange."

"What do you mean?" Amara asked, scrunching her nose. Her father pointed up towards the last sliver of sun. "Well, light has to travel all the way from the Sun…

"Well, light has to travel all the way from the Sun to reach our eyes, and it isn't instant. In fact, that light journey takes exactly 8 minutes and 20 seconds!" He tapped his watch for emphasis. "So, the sun we see disappearing actually set over eight minutes ago."

"What do you mean?" Amara asked, scrunching her nose. Her father pointed up towards the last sliver of sun.
