Layla, her sister Sophie, and their mom were walking through Golden Gate Park on a sunny Saturday. Sophie skipped ahead, chasing a butterfly. "Mom, why do some butterflies have such bright colors?" Layla looked up from her notebook, pausing her sketching. "That's a great question, Sophie! It makes me wonder, what makes living things so different from each other?"

Later, at Tony's Pizza, Layla was still thinking about it. Jake, her older brother, grabbed a slice. "What's got you so pensive, Layla?" Layla tapped her pencil against her chin. "I was wondering, what makes a butterfly different from a redwood tree? They're both alive, but completely different." Marcus, ever the pragmatist, chimed in. "Maybe it's like a code. Different instructions create different things."

"A code?" Layla asked, intrigued. Marcus nodded. "Yeah, like a secret recipe. It would have to be unbelievably complex." Layla grabbed her notebook and started sketching. "That's it! We need to understand the secret recipe of life!" The scene shifted. "England, 1853. A quiet study filled with books and papers..."

In the study sat Rosalind Franklin, a brilliant chemist and X-ray crystallographer. She loved puzzles, especially the kind hidden in nature. What made up living things? What invisible structures controlled their form? She was determined to find out. It was a passion that drove her every day.

Rosalind spent countless hours in her lab, meticulously preparing samples and adjusting her X-ray equipment. One evening, exhausted but determined, she muttered to herself, "As Marie Curie said, 'Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.'" She took one last X-ray of a DNA sample.

"And mine makes me a great artist!" Marcus, ever the data man, added, "Actually, the numbers show that humans share 99.9% of their DNA. The tiny differences make all the difference!"

Layla nodded. "Exactly! It's in everything!" Sophie pointed to her pizza. "Even in the cheese?" Layla laughed. "Yep! And the sauce, and the crust!" Marcus added, "It's what makes your hair curly, Layla, and Jake's height. And it's what allows plants to grow toward the sunlight," Layla said with a wide smile.

Layla smiled. "So, DNA is the code of life, making each living thing unique!" Sophie, ever curious, piped up. "But if DNA makes us different... what makes us the same?" Layla winked. "That's exactly what we'll explore next time!" She opened her notebook and wrote: 'Discovery #1: DNA is the code of life!'
