He sped up again, determined to unravel the mystery.

And the package... it's on the counter!" Maya joined him, her expression shifting from amusement to curiosity. "What package? The one wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine?" Leo nodded emphatically. "That's the one! It had strange symbols on it, Maya.

A bell jingled as the door opened, and Mr. Abernathy emerged, dusting off his hands.

"We have to find out what's in that package," Leo declared, straightening his spectacles. "It could be a clue to a long-lost treasure or a secret invention!"…
"We have to find out what's in that package," Leo declared, straightening his spectacles. "It could be a clue to a long-lost treasure or a secret invention!" Maya frowned. "We can't just barge in and demand to see it, Leo. That's rude. Besides, Mr. Abernathy isn't going to just show it to us." Mr. Abernathy emerged from the shop. Leo got an idea, and a grin spread across his face. "Therefore... We'll offer to help him with something!

They approached Mr. Abernathy, who was struggling to prune a particularly unruly rose bush. "Mr. Abernathy!" Leo called out.

Mr. Abernathy, a kindly old man with a twinkle in his eye, smiled. "Why, that's very kind of you, children. I could certainly use the help. The weeds have been growing like crazy!" As they weeded, Leo subtly steered the conversation.

"Those weeds need pullin' properly, kids," he ordered, pointing at the flowerbeds.

And now, he noticed something else: a faint, rhythmic ticking sound was coming from it! "Did you hear that, Maya?" Leo whispered, feigning pulling weeds. "Hear what?" she replied, also whispering. "A ticking sound! Like a clock! I read about ticking clocks in the detective novels.

The strange symbols... they aren't random. They are celestial signs from the old star charts!" She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, worn book. A page was bookmarked with a drawing of a constellation in it, BUT Mr. Silas was just behind them.

Leo, sensing an opportunity, said quickly, "Mr. Abernathy mentioned his spectacles are broken. I know how to fix spectacles, and it will give us a reason to get inside the shop again!" Maya's eyes widened. "That's brilliant, Leo!" Mr. Silas, distracted, grunted. "Fine. But don't take too long.

Inside the shop, Leo carefully examined Mr. Abernathy's spectacles. "The lens is cracked. I can fix it, but I need a special magnifying glass from the back room." Mr. Abernathy, distracted by a customer, waved him on. "Go ahead, Leo. You know where it is." As Leo crept toward the back room, Maya approached the counter where the package sat. The ticking was louder now, almost frantic. She glanced around, then reached out and carefully lifted the package.

This could be it. All or nothing.

"It's a clockwork nightingale!" Maya exclaimed, gazing in wonder. Just then, Mr. Abernathy returned, beaming. "Ah, you've discovered my latest creation! It's a gift for my niece. She loves birds and has always wanted to visit the constellations, but is unable to get out of bed.
