The Day Yasuke Entered Nobunaga's Castle (1581, Japan)
Coming to Wonder History on 12 December 2026.
In the spring of 1581 a crowd on Kyoto's Sanjō Bridge nearly tramples the Jesuit party travelling with Alessandro Valignano, because everyone in the capital wants to touch the skin of the tall African man walking with them. What begins as curiosity becomes a crush: a scaffold goes down at the Nanbanji church, a temple wall is torn apart at Honnō-ji, and Oda Nobunaga himself orders the stranger scrubbed with well water to prove the colour is no dye. Satisfied — delighted — the warlord takes Yasuke east along the Tōkaidō to Lake Biwa. Valignano sails for Kyushu from Azuchi's wharf and Yasuke stays behind, climbing the great stone stair of Azuchi Castle as a retainer, not a curiosity. He saves the page Mori Ranmaru from a bolting warhorse, smothers a brazier fire in the gilded top floor of the donjon with his own cloak, and is handed a stipend, a short sword, and a house of his own. The story ends at night on the lakeshore beneath the illuminated castle, Yasuke riding out with Nobunaga's gourd standard among ten thousand floating lanterns.
