Nils helped his mother, Adaeze, arrange her handmade ceramic pots on the shelves. Each one held a different plant. "These are beautiful, Mama," Nils said, admiring the vibrant colors. "But how did people even make these before ovens?"

Adaeze smiled. "That's a great question, Nils. Open your 'Invention Encyclopedia'; maybe it will have the answer." Nils ran to his room, his leather-bound book calling to him from the shelf. As he touched the cover, a bright light filled the room. "Here we go again!" he exclaimed, bracing himself for another journey through time.

Nils and Ivana landed with a thump in what looked like an ancient village. \"Woah, where are we now?\" Ivana asked, brushing dust off her tunic. \"China, I think,\" Nils replied, flipping through his encyclopedia.

A frustrated potter emerged from a workshop, wiping sweat from his brow. \"Another failed firing!\" he muttered.

"Trouble?" the potter, Cai Yong, exclaimed. "I've lost a fortune! Each firing costs me resources; wood and time, not to mention the clay. Emperor An of Han needs these pots for the palace, and I'm losing money with every ruined piece!" He gestured to a pile of cracked and discolored ceramics. "The temperature is impossible to control."

"I read in my encyclopedia that the key is airflow," Nils said, opening his notebook. "If you can control the flow of hot air, you can get a more even temperature throughout the kiln." Cai Yong raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Show me!" he urged. Nils pointed to his notes: "The Encyclopedia says the secret is a chimney and strategically placed holes, called dampers." Ivana added, "And a firebox!"

Together, they worked for days. Cai Yong, Nils, and Ivana built a chimney to direct the smoke and added dampers to control the airflow. Cai Yong explained, "Before you came along in 105 AD, the success rate was only about 30%. If this works, I can finally meet the demands of the Han Dynasty and make a real profit!"

Finally, the day arrived to test the new kiln. Cai Yong loaded it with his finest clay, and together they lit the fire. They adjusted the dampers, watching the smoke rise steadily through the chimney. Hours passed. Cai Yong carefully opened the kiln. "It worked!" he cried, pulling out a perfectly fired, vibrant blue vase. "The colors are even, the clay is strong!"

Back in Nils's room, the encyclopedia closed with a soft thud. "Wow," Ivana said, "so even something as simple as controlling the air can be a huge invention." Nils grinned. "It really connected people, Ivana. Thanks to Cai Yong's improved kiln, ceramics became more affordable and accessible to everyone."

Nils ran downstairs. "Mama, I learned how the kiln was invented!" he exclaimed. "And now, the global ceramics market is worth billions of dollars, all because of that invention!" Adaeze smiled. "See, Nils? Curiosity can lead to amazing discoveries!"
