Shackleton's Boat: Frank Worsley Finds South Georgia

Coming to Wonder People on 30 November 2026.

In April 1916, twenty-two castaways are stranded on a shingle spit at the foot of an Antarctic glacier, and the only way home is to sail a 22-foot open whaleboat 800 miles across the worst ocean on earth to a speck of rock called South Georgia. Four men carry that gamble: Ernest Shackleton, who decides; Tom Crean, who hauls; Harry McNish, who nails the boat together again and again; and Frank Worsley, the navigator, who must hit a 100-mile island after sixteen days of cloud with four snatched sextant sights taken while two men hold his legs. The story moves from the launch through brash ice, into the reeking crawlspace under the canvas deck, up onto an iced-over foredeck, under a rogue wave that nearly ends everything, past the breakers of Annenkov Island, onto a beach in King Haakon Bay, over the island's uncharted ice ridges, and finally to a ridge above the whaling station at Stromness, where three ruined men look down on chimneys, ships and smoke.
