A Letter to the Perplexed
Coming to Wonder Philosophy on 27 November 2026.
In 1190, in Fustat beside the Nile, the old physician Moses Maimonides is racing to finish a long letter of answers — the Guide for the Perplexed — for his departing pupil Joseph ben Judah, who must sail north before the autumn ships stop. A gust off the river scatters the loose sheets across Egypt, and the hunt is on: up ladders and down a Nilometer well, through a lantern souk, into a sultan's herb garden, onto the lower blocks of the Great Pyramid, and finally under the gate of Bab Zuwayla, where a tiny bookbinder stitches the rescued pages into a book. Helped by a dovecote girl and her white pigeon, the four carry the finished volume downriver by felucca to the harbour of Alexandria, where it goes aboard a ship beneath the Pharos lighthouse — one letter, chased across a whole country, finally on its way.
