The Boy on the Island
Coming to Wonder Philosophy on 30 November 2026.
On a wild green island off the coast of Serendib (Sri Lanka), a boy called Hayy has been raised since babyhood by an old gazelle he calls Umm. A monsoon storm wrecks their world: the shore is buried in wreckage, the spring is choked with a boulder, and Umm has grown too stiff to climb to the high grass. Page by page Hayy thinks his way out of each trouble — he levers the boulder, lashes a bamboo sled, carries fire down a mountain in a clay shell — until he can deliver Umm safely to the gazelle herd in the upland meadow and let her go. Alone and newly curious about everything above him, he is startled when a capsized boat appears on the reef; he hauls its owner, a quiet scholar named Absal, out of the shallows. Together they dry Absal's scattered books on the cliff, chase the flying pages, mend the boat on the coral flats and sail at dawn. The story ends in the stone harbour of Galle beneath Adam's Peak, where Hayy steps off a boat into a crowd of people for the very first time.
