In the realm where slumber kisses reality, a grand railway snaked through the whispering forests of the mind, a conduit between worlds. Here lived three brothers: Espen, the Ash Lad, forever coated in soot; Per, the strong and boastful; and Pål, the clever and sly. A trial awaited them, a quest for a golden goose that promised riches beyond measure, but only the purest heart could claim it. The path was fraught with temptation and illusion, where the gleaming allure of gold masked the true treasure: kindness.

Espen toiled endlessly by the locomotives, earning his name and a constant layer of grime. "Why do you waste your days cleaning engines when gold awaits?" Pål scoffed, polishing his spectacles. "The world doesn't reward soot-stained hands, brother.". Per flexed his biceps. "Strength and cunning, that's the true path."

A royal messenger arrived, his voice echoing through the railyard, announcing, "The King proclaims a quest: Whosoever brings him the Golden Goose shall win half his kingdom and the Princess's hand!" Pål grinned, adjusting his spectacles. "Opportunity knocks, brothers! Time to show the world our worth."

Per and Pål set off with bread and dried meat. They soon encountered a baker, weary and slumped beside the tracks, who asked for food. "Share your bounty, brothers," the baker wheezed, his eyes pleading. Per shoved him aside. "We have a kingdom to win, old man. Every crumb is precious."

Further down the line, they found a shepherd, tending his flock amidst the whispering pines. He too begged for sustenance. "A morsel, sirs, to ease this gnawing hunger?" Pål, ever cunning, eyed the sheep. "We're on a quest, old man. We cannot spare a bite. Besides," he sneered, "those sheep look rather plump."

Espen, trailing behind, met the same baker and shepherd. With a smile, he offered his meager provisions. "Take half," he insisted. "A full belly makes for a brighter journey."

The brothers arrived at an inn where laughter and music spilled into the forest. The landlord, a jovial man with twinkling eyes, greeted them. "Welcome, travelers! Rest and revel, for tomorrow holds the final stretch!" Per and Pål gorged themselves, neglecting the geese roosting in the yard.

"'The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing,'" Espen murmured, remembering the words of Socrates as he watched his brothers revel. Espen slipped into the yard, where the geese slept. He plucked a golden feather. Immediately, the geese, the landlord, and the other guests were stuck to him in a long laughing train.

Before the King, Per and Pål offered jewels and maps. The King scoffed. Then Espen appeared, a parade of laughter in tow. The Princess, captivated by his kindness, declared, "This is the truest treasure! The heart that shares is richer than any kingdom!"

Espen, the Ash Lad, won not half a kingdom, but the whole world's affection, and the Princess's hand. The gold he sought was found not in a goose's plume, but in the laughter he shared. For true wealth, like the railway itself, connects hearts and bridges dreams.
