'Long ago,' Old Man Thistle rasped, his voice like rustling leaves, 'the Ice Maiden was a spring nymph, full of laughter. But a betrayal froze her heart.

Amara traced the frozen patterns on a rose petal. 'Is there no way to break the spell?' she asked, her voice barely a whisper. 'Only an act of true selflessness,' Thistle replied, his eyes filled with sorrow, 'can thaw a frozen heart.'

Before Amara left, Thistle handed her a small, tarnished mirror. 'This mirror shows not your reflection, but the truth within,' he said gravely.

He warned, 'The Ice Maiden sees only the cold in others, but mirrors show our truest selves.' Amara tucked it into her belt, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. 'I will try,' she promised, turning towards the frosted lands.

The frosted lands bit at Amara's bare skin, each step crackling with frost. A patch of frostflowers bloomed, their petals shimmering with icy beauty.

A voice echoed, like winter wind, 'Such beauty... pluck one, little rose, and wear it in your hair. It will keep you safe from the cold.' But Amara remembered Thistle's words. 'The Ice Maiden only sees the cold.'

'They are yours for the taking. Warmth and wealth beyond your wildest dreams.' Amara stared at the jewels, picturing her kingdom restored. But something held her back. This was greed. 'No,' she said, her voice trembling but firm.

She pressed on, reaching a frozen garden, where ice sculptures of nymphs stood trapped in eternal winter. One sculpture resembled a younger version of the Ice Maiden, her face frozen in a silent scream. 'Free them, little rose,' the voice pleaded, now laced with desperation. 'Free them, and I will spare your kingdom.' Amara hesitated, her heart aching for the trapped nymphs. To free them she'd have to use the mirror...and she only had one chance.

She held the mirror towards the nearest ice sculpture. 'I see your sorrow. I see your loneliness. You are not a monster.' As she spoke, a single tear rolled down the Ice Maiden's cheek, a tear of pure water.

The ice sculptures began to thaw, releasing the nymphs from their frozen prisons. The frosted lands shimmered as spring returned, its warmth spreading through the air. The Ice Maiden appeared, no longer a figure of icy terror, but a nymph with tears streaming down her face. 'Thank you,' she whispered, her voice like melting snow. 'You have shown me what I had forgotten: compassion.'

The rose garden bloomed anew, its wellspring flowing with life. Amara returned, not with jewels or warmth, but with understanding. From that day on, both kingdoms flourished side-by-side in peace, because a princess chose compassion over greed. When she was asked about her courage, she always said, 'As Helen Keller said, 'The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.' The greatest weapon is understanding'.
