In a forest unlike any other, where squirrels wore spectacles and owls debated philosophy, lived Marushka, a kind girl with a heart full of songs, and her stepmother, a woman whose heart was as cold as the winter wind. Old King Wenceslas' law demanded winter flowers. Marushka's impossible wish set forth a perilous journey. This is the tale of how she discovered the true seasons—and the power of kindness in the face of cruel greed.

Lost and shivering, Marushka wept. She wandered deeper into the forest when a glimmer of light caught her eye. "Who we are with is who we become," she whispered, remembering something her mother used to say. It was originally from Goethe, her mother explained once. Ahead, nestled amongst the snow-laden pines, stood twelve figures circling a bonfire, their faces illuminated by the flickering flames.

"Perhaps you should turn back. The forest holds many wolves, little one. Return home, warmth awaits."

The Months released Holena from her icy prison, but she was changed. She was given the kindness to look upon all the months and understand their struggles. Marushka learned to use her gifts for good, sharing them and teaching their ways. And so, Marushka blossomed. For in a world that demanded greed, it was her heart that understood a simple truth: Winter's harshness makes way for the beauty of spring. Kindness given is kindness returned.
