"It looked like a shooting star, but... brighter," Layla pondered, pulling out her notebook. David chuckled, parking the car near Everett Middle School.

But sometimes, you see a lot of them at once. That's a meteor shower." A group of students walked past, chattering about the upcoming science fair. "So, why do meteor showers happen?" Layla asked.

David's voice continued, "He was fascinated by comets, especially after seeing a particularly bright one in 1682." Halley, pacing in his study, mumbled, "If only I could predict when these celestial wanderers will return!"

Halley, poring over his notes, muttered, "Newton said, 'If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants'.
Halley, poring over his notes, muttered, "Newton said, 'If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants'. I must use his laws of motion to understand these comets!" Years turned into decades as he meticulously calculated orbits. He then bravely published his prediction: a comet would return in 1758. Sadly, he died before he could see it with his own eyes.

In 1758, astronomers confirmed Halley's prediction. The comet returned, just as he said. It was then named Halley's Comet in his honor.

As comets travel through space, they leave behind a trail of dust and debris. When Earth passes through that debris, we see a meteor shower!

Understanding comets and meteors helps us predict meteor showers and even understand the early solar system. A fun fact: Honey never spoils.

"No way!" Chloe exclaimed. "So, like, when I see a shooting star, I'm actually seeing comet dust burning up?" Layla nodded. "Yep!

But if comets are basically dirty snowballs... what are they made of?" David smiled. "That's exactly what we'll explore next time!" Layla scribbled in her notebook: Discovery #1: Meteors come from comets!
