Rin stared at the half-finished block tower. "Why do we always build with squares, Uncle Nikhil?" she asked, poking a finger at one of the blocks. Nikhil chuckled, ruffling her hair. "Well, they're easy to stack, squirt. Imagine trying to make a round house out of these!" Rin frowned, unconvinced. "But what about domes, like in old buildings? Who even figured out how to make those things stand up?"

Rin raced to her room, the question burning in her mind. She pulled her worn, leather-bound Invention Encyclopedia from the shelf. "Time to find some answers," she muttered, opening the glowing book to a random page. As light swirled around her, Rin clutched the book tightly. This time travel still made her nervous, no matter how many times she had done it!

She landed with a thump in a bustling marketplace. The air smelled of woodsmoke and stone. "Whoa! Where am I?" she wondered aloud. A woman selling pottery nearby overheard her, "Florence, of course! It's 1418, child. Surely you know of the competition to design the dome for our great cathedral?" Rin's eyes widened. 'As Leonardo da Vinci said, 'Study the science of art. Study the art of science.' She mumbled, realizing this was the perfect moment to learn all about domes.'

"The cathedral?" Rin asked, approaching a woman sketching in a notebook. "Is it about Filippo Brunelleschi?" The woman, Nalini, looked up surprised. "Indeed! That's me. Word of my work travels quickly, it seems. I am working on a design without scaffolding! Do you think it possible?"

Rin gasped. "Without scaffolding? How?" Nalini grinned. "Ah, that's the secret! Others want to fill the entire space with wood supports. But I've studied the Romans. They used herringbone brickwork, interlocking layers, and a double shell to lighten the load. Plus, a special chain and pulley system to lift the materials!"

"Herringbone?" Rin asked, scribbling in her notebook. "You mean the bricks are laid at an angle?" Nalini nodded. "Exactly! It distributes the weight evenly. Took lots of experiments. The Guilds didn't believe I could do it. They wanted to use the traditional Roman method! I told them, give me 2 years. It's going to cost 36,000 florins and take the work of the best artisans around."

"And did it work?" Rin asked, her eyes wide with excitement. Nalini smiled. "It did! Took sixteen years of hard work, and when it was done, it was the largest dome ever built. People said it was a miracle! Plus, the interlocking design is still used today in modern construction! It's the same principle with geodesic domes. Buckminster Fuller used a similar concept when building them."

Suddenly, the marketplace began to fade. "Oh no, I'm going back!" Rin exclaimed. Nalini smiled sadly. "Go well, little architect. Remember that what we build reflects what we dream." With a final wave, Rin was enveloped in light and whisked away.

Back in her room, Rin slammed the Encyclopedia shut. She raced back to Uncle Nikhil, who was still fiddling with the block tower. "Uncle Nikhil! I know how they built domes! They used interlocking bricks and special lifting systems!" she declared, excitedly grabbing his hand. "That's how they built the Duomo in Florence, back in 1436!"

Nikhil chuckled, pulling her in for a hug. "Well, maybe we can try building a mini-dome ourselves!" he said, smiling. Rin grinned, already imagining the possibilities. Building a Dome would be hard work, but they were going to build it brick by brick until it was done!
