"Katya, could you pass me the solar lamp?" Auntie Tala called from the garden, carefully tending to a bed of fire-flowers. Katya, distracted by her reflection shimmering in a volcanic pool, almost didn't hear her. "These fire-flowers need plenty of light to bloom properly," Auntie Tala explained, adjusting the lamp's angle. "I wonder, who even invented these lamps? How did people see at night before them?"

Katya's eyes lit up with curiosity. "I'm going to find out!" she exclaimed, rushing towards their small hut built into the side of a dormant volcano. Inside, Katya headed straight for her room, a space filled with models of volcanoes, geodes, and charts of the night sky. On a shelf, glowing faintly, sat her Magical Invention Encyclopedia.

As Katya reached for the book, a swirling vortex of light enveloped the room. "Here we go again!" she giggled, grabbing her leather notebook from her side table. The room dissolved into a blur of colors, and when the light cleared, Katya gasped. She had been transported to a dusty workshop filled with strange equipment.

"Good heavens, another broken insulator!" a man shouted, throwing his hands up in exasperation. A woman responded, "Humphrey, patience. Remember what DaVinci said, 'Patience serves as a protection against wrongs as clothes do against cold.' We'll figure this out." Katya recognized the name; it was Humphrey Davy, one of the early pioneers of electrical transmission. "Who are you, child?" Davy asked, eyeing Katya with suspicion.

"I'm Katya, and I'm fascinated by how things work," Katya replied, holding up her notebook. "I know all about your electric arc lamp, but what about transmitting electricity over long distances?" Davy sighed. "That's the real challenge! We can generate electricity, but getting it from the power source to homes and factories miles away... the wires melt, the insulators break. It's a disaster! In 1813 we developed the largest battery ever made by that time, 2000 pairs of plates. But it was only able to illuminate a limited distance."

"What about using different materials?" Katya suggested, flipping through her notebook. "I read that the ancient Romans used lead pipes for water. Could lead or copper work better?" Mrs. Davy chimed in, "We've tried copper, child, but it's too expensive to use for long, long lines. Copper cost around 20 pounds a ton back then." Katya pondered, scratching her chin. "What about the insulators? What are they made of?"

"Originally glass, but they kept cracking," Mrs. Davy replied. "Now we're testing porcelain, but it's brittle too." Katya suddenly remembered something she read about a new kind of material. "What about gutta-percha?" Katya exclaimed. "It's a type of rubber that's naturally insulating. Did you know in 1845, Werner von Siemens used it to insulate underwater telegraph wires?!" Humphrey and Mrs. Davy exchanged surprised glances.

Days turned into weeks, and the Davys, with Katya's suggestion, experimented with gutta-percha. It worked! The electricity flowed further, the insulators held, and the wires stayed cool. "By Jove, it's working!" Humphrey cried, throwing his arms around his wife. "Thanks to you, Katya! This could change everything!" Soon after more research of finding strong metals for wires, electrical power could be transmitted efficiently over long distances.

With a familiar swirl of light, Katya found herself back in her room. The Encyclopedia sat closed on her shelf. She closed her notebook and ran to find her Auntie Tala. "Auntie, you won't believe it! People struggled for years to send electricity over distances, but one little material changed everything!"

"It's amazing to think that those simple power lines connecting our island to the rest of the world are the result of so much hard work and ingenuity," Auntie Tala said, gazing at the distant lights twinkling across the water. "In 2022, the global electric power transmission, control, and distribution market reached 216.2 billion!" Katya smiled. "Imagine where we'll be in another two hundred years!"
