Zaire sat at the rough-hewn table, sketching in his worn leather notebook. His family's underground home was bustling with activity, villagers moving through the dimly lit tunnels. "Zaire, can you fetch me some phosphorescent fungus from the west cavern?" his mother called from across the cavern. "We need it for the lamps tonight."

Zaire grabbed his notebook and a small woven basket. "Why do we live underground, Mama?" he asked, his voice echoing slightly in the cavern. "Why can't we see the sun like in the old stories?" His mother sighed, pausing from grinding roots. "Long ago, the surface became too dangerous, too bright. We adapted, but oh, how useful it would be to see in the dark!"

Later that evening, Zaire sat beside his grandfather, Tane, who was tending a small fire. "Grandpa, Mama said it would be useful to see in the dark. But how?" Tane chuckled, his eyes twinkling in the firelight. "'The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way,' Marcus Aurelius once said, Zaire. Our darkness might just lead us to the light."

That night, Zaire ran to his small room, his heart pounding with excitement. He pulled his glowing Invention Encyclopedia from the shelf. As he opened the ancient book, swirling light engulfed the room. Suddenly, the familiar cavern walls dissolved, replaced by a bustling workshop filled with strange tools and buzzing machinery.

A man with a focused expression and kind eyes looked up from his workbench. "Who are you, young man? And how did you get in here?" he asked, wiping grease from his hands with a cloth. "I'm Zaire," he replied, still dazed. "Where am I?"

"You are in San Diego, California, in the year 1939," the man explained, smiling. "I am William Hyde. And I am trying to invent something that will help people see in the dark." Zaire's eyes widened. "Like night vision goggles? How?"

"It's not easy," William Hyde explained, pointing to a complicated-looking device. "I started with infrared technology. Did you know that some animals, like snakes, can 'see' heat? I am trying to amplify that ability! The US Army needs this. As of 2024, the night vision equipment industry is estimated to generate 8.4 billion USD! I believe that this invention will impact society significantly."

Suddenly, William Hyde shouted. "Eureka! I've got it!" He held up a bulky device with lenses. "By converting infrared light into visible light, we can amplify the faint light and 'see' in the dark!" He adjusted the goggles and peered into a darkened corner. "It works!"

In a flash, Zaire was back in his room. The Invention Encyclopedia lay open on his lap. 'Necessity is the mother of invention,' he thought, recalling the quote by Plato that he read in his encyclopedia. 'We needed to see in the dark, and William Hyde found a way.'

Zaire raced to his mother. "Mama, I know how we can see in the dark!" He explained everything he had learned about William Hyde and infrared light. He knew it would take more than just learning about it, but he felt empowered. Maybe one day, he could invent something that would help his village see the sun again. For now, it's enough to see the solution to problems right in front of you.
