Jia shivered, pulling her thick fur-lined hood tighter. The wind howled across the frozen tundra, biting at any exposed skin. "I don't know how people even wake up on time way out here!" she exclaimed, stamping her snow boots. Her grandfather, Kofi, chuckled, adjusting the straps of his sled, "Well, they certainly didn't have alarm clocks, that's for sure. Imagine a world before such a thing!"

That evening, back in her cozy, science-themed room filled with posters of planets and engineering diagrams, Jia stared at her glowing encyclopedia. "Grandpa's right! Who even invented the alarm clock?" she mumbled, running her fingers along the cover. With a deep breath, she opened the ancient book. Light swirled around her, pulling her into its pages!

Jia found herself standing in a dimly lit workshop. The air was thick with the smell of metal and coal smoke. "Where am I now?" she wondered aloud. A woman's voice replied, "You're in Philadelphia, 1787, young lady. And who might you be?"

The woman, Devi, smiled kindly. "I'm Devi, and I'm trying to solve a rather... pressing problem. People need to wake up on time, especially us watchmakers!" she explained, gesturing to the scattered clock components. "As Leonardo da Vinci said, 'Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer.' But how can we ensure we return on time?"

Devi picked up a large brass clock. "See, these early clocks can tell time, but they don't tell you when it's time to wake up! I need something... automatic." She tinkered with the gears, a look of intense concentration on her face. "Before these, people relied on things like the sun, church bells, or even 'knocker-uppers' who tapped on windows with long poles!"

Days turned into weeks, filled with failed attempts. One clock chimed every five minutes. Another spun its hands wildly. Jia diligently sketched in her notebook, documenting each experiment. "It's all about controlling the release of energy," Devi muttered, covered in soot. "We need a consistent, reliable trigger!"

Then, one afternoon, Devi had an idea. "What if... instead of just striking the bell, we use a spring-loaded hammer to repeatedly strike it?" she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. She quickly adjusted the mechanism, adding a small, precisely placed spring. "Eureka!" she cried, as a clear, insistent ringing filled the workshop.

"That's it! The first alarm clock!" Jia exclaimed, writing furiously in her notebook. Devi smiled, "Indeed! In the late 18th century, clockmaking was a booming industry – worth millions, even then. But this... this will change how everyone lives. No more missed appointments or late starts!"

Suddenly, the workshop dissolved around Jia. She was back in her room, the encyclopedia closed in her lap. Rushing downstairs, she found Kofi reading in his armchair. "Grandpa! I know who invented the alarm clock! It was Devi, a watchmaker in 1787!"

She grabbed his hand, pulling him toward the kitchen. \"And guess what? Because of her, we don't have to rely on roosters or knocker-uppers anymore! That's how important communication and media are, they connect us. Just think: now, the global alarm clock industry is worth billions!\" Jia grinned, setting the timer on the microwave for popcorn.
