"There's a story behind that, you know," Kaya said, patting Tendai's hand. "Come on, let's check your 'Wonder Inventions Encyclopedia'." Back at their temporary carnival caravan, Tendai pulled out his worn leather notebook and the ancient, glowing book from his shelf. As he opened it, the room dissolved into a swirling vortex of light, pulling him back in time. "This is going to be good!" Tendai shouts, his eyes full of excitement.

Tendai landed with a thump in a dimly lit workshop, the air thick with the smell of chemicals and wood shavings. "Where are we, Gogo?" he asked, brushing off his clothes. "I believe we're in England, around 1826," Kaya replied, consulting a small, ornate compass. "And that, my boy, must be Mr. John Walker, the inventor of the friction match."

John Walker, a serious man with ink-stained fingers, looked up, startled. "Who are you two? And how did you get in here?" he demanded, wiping his brow.

"Matches, eh?" Walker sighed, gesturing to a workbench covered in small, treated cardboard sticks. "It's been a frustrating endeavor.

My 'friction lights' are an improvement, but still not perfect. They cost a shilling for a box of 50."

"What's the problem?" Tendai asked, scribbling notes in his notebook. "The mixture is tricky," Walker explained, carefully dipping a stick into a pot of chemicals. "Potassium chlorate, antimony sulfide, gum arabic, and starch... It needs just the right balance. And the striking surface must be rough enough to create friction, but not so rough it damages the match head. It wasn't until I accidentally scraped a treated stick on my hearth at home, though, that I figured it out!"

"It's still not perfect, and it isn't nearly as inexpensive as I'd like it to be, but it's a start!" Tendai grinned, remembering Zaire's struggle back at the carnival. "'The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,' Mr. Walker," he said, quoting Lao Tzu. "You've taken a big one!"

Tendai raced back to Zaire's stall, a box of modern matches in his hand. "Here, Zaire! Try these!" Zaire struck a match, his face lighting up with surprise.
