How do they make such detailed patterns?" Luka pulled out a small, worn leather notebook. "I read that patterns once were made by hand, one thread at a time, but that must have taken ages!"

Luka sighed, adjusted his satchel, and pulled out his glowing invention encyclopedia, a warm light illuminating their faces. The room began to dissolve, light swirling around them. "Well, as Leonardo da Vinci said, 'Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer.' I suppose he means we need to see for ourselves!"

Suddenly, the swirling light vanished, replaced by the clamor of 18th-century England. They stood in a dimly lit workshop, the air thick with the smell of wool and sweat. "Good heavens!" Devi exclaimed, coughing. "Where are we?" A man with spectacles perched on his nose looked up from a complicated contraption of wood and metal. "Can I help you, children? This is my workshop, where I am trying to mechanize the weaving process."

James Hargreaves wiped his brow with a rag. "I am James Hargreaves, and I'm trying to invent a machine that can weave many threads at once, like a whole row of spinners working together!" Nils tilted his head. "But why?" Hargreaves gestured at a woman struggling to operate a handloom. "Because weaving by hand is slow and tiring. People need cloth, and they need it faster!"

"The first one I built, the Spinning Jenny, could spin eight threads at once," James Hargreaves explained, carefully adjusting a lever on his contraption.

It made a weaker thread. I worked hard to improve it so it can spin even more and stronger!" Luka scribbled furiously in his notebook. "Did it make a lot of money?"

Some people didn't like that it could do the work of many people, but it provided good, cheap cloth!" He paused, stroking his chin. "Later on, Edmund Cartwright invented an even better weaving machine powered by water!"

That's how inventions change the world!" A strange item caught Nils's eye—a broken piece of the loom with multiple threads attached.
