But tell me, have you ever stopped to wonder how we manage to have food even when it's not growing season? Who thought of this food storage stuff?" Karim's eyes widened as he sprinted towards his bedroom, yelling over his shoulder, "I bet my Wonder Invention Encyclopedia knows!"

Karim gasped as he landed with a thump in a dusty field. He saw rows upon rows of wheat swaying in the breeze. A young girl, around eleven, walked by carrying a heavy basket, grumbling, "Another season, another mountain of grain to rot." Karim frowned, remembering something he had learned in school. "Didn't Benjamin Franklin say, 'By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail'? I wonder if that applies to this food rotting problem."

It's like what you were reading about in your science books. It costs us so much money, and people go hungry even when we have more than enough during harvest!"

The man knelt down. "I'm Thomas Gaylord," he said. "And you're right, Ingrid. I've been trying to find a better way to store grain for years.

I read about ancient methods, like pits and underground storage, but they're not very effective. I want something that keeps the grain dry and safe from pests."

Karim piped up, "So, you're inventing something like a giant, grain-saving jar?" Thomas smiled. "Exactly! That's what I'm trying to do.

\"It took many years of trial and error,\" Thomas explained, as a partially built structure loomed behind them. \"The first wooden silos rotted.
