Amadi's eyes widened. He dashed toward the edge of the carnival, already pulling out his worn leather notebook. "I'm going to check my encyclopedia! This is important!"

Amadi landed with a thump in a field of fluffy white cotton. "Whoa!" he exclaimed, coughing slightly. He saw people picking cotton, their faces tired and backs aching. One woman looked up at him and sighed. "It's never-ending," she said, wiping her brow. "As Mark Twain said, 'The secret of getting ahead is getting started.' But sometimes it feels like we'll never finish!"

"What's wrong?" Amadi asked. "Why does everyone look so sad?" The woman pointed to the massive piles of cotton. "We have to separate the seeds from the cotton by hand! It takes forever!" Another man, sweating profusely, added, "It takes one person an entire day to clean just one pound of cotton. It's backbreaking work!"

The Cotton Gin inventor?" Whitney nodded. "I am working on a solution to this very problem. I've been testing this new contraption over here."

Whitney showed Amadi a complex-looking contraption. "It uses a system of hooks and a brush to separate the seeds from the cotton.
Whitney showed Amadi a complex-looking contraption. "It uses a system of hooks and a brush to separate the seeds from the cotton. It's not perfect yet," Whitney explained. "But I believe it will greatly reduce the labor required. Early versions of it were very hand-cranked. The original machine could process around 50 pounds of cotton in a single day!"

Didn't the Cotton Gin just make the problem worse?" Whitney sighed. "Unfortunately, it did increase demand and thus increased slavery since there was more demand to pick the cotton. It's a complex issue."

Amadi raced back to the carnival, finding Zola and Rohan by the cotton candy stand. "I learned about the Cotton Gin!" he exclaimed. "It was amazing, but also complicated." Rohan smiled. "Well, that's true of most inventions. Today, modern automated cotton gins driven by electric motors can process up to 15 bales of cotton per hour!" Zola added. "Everything has its ups and downs, but still important to learn what happened. To be continued..."
