Alina sat on a moss-covered rooftop, overlooking the neon-lit ruins of the city, sketching in her leather notebook. "Another day, another broken bridge," she sighed, watching drones struggle to navigate the overgrown landscape. Astrid, sitting beside her, smiled gently. "Someone needs to invent a better way to explore underwater too!" she said, gesturing towards the flooded lower levels.

"Underwater?" Alina asked, her eyes widening. "Wait a second—how did people explore the ocean before we had these fancy submersible drones?" She leaped up and raced inside, leaving Astrid laughing softly. Alina dashed through the overgrown corridors of her home, a repurposed skyscraper, and into her science-themed bedroom. Her fingers brushed along the spines of her books until she found it – the Magical Invention Encyclopedia, glowing faintly on the shelf.

One passage caught her eye: "Early divers faced crushing pressure and darkness." The book glowed brighter, pulling her in. "I wonder what it was like?" she murmured, her heart pounding with anticipation, notebook clutched tight.

Alina stumbled, landing on cobblestones. The air was thick with the smell of salt and coal smoke. She saw a bustling London dockyard, circa 1830.

Sailors shouted, ropes creaked, and waves crashed against wooden hulls. "Where am I?" she exclaimed, clutching her notebook. A man with grease-stained hands looked at her, bewildered. "Blimey, who's this then?"

A tall man with spectacles, AUGUSTUS SIEBE, approached them, wiping his hands on a rag. "Leave the child be, Jenkins. Are you lost, miss?" he asked Alina kindly. Alina, wide-eyed, stammered, "I... I'm researching the invention of the diving suit! Were people really diving back then?" Siebe chuckled, "Indeed they were, but it was a dangerous endeavor!" He gestured towards a strange contraption made of leather and metal.

"Before diving suits, underwater repairs were a nightmare. Imagine trying to fix a ship's hull with just a weighted rope!" Siebe explained, leading her to his workshop. "Many died or were seriously injured due to pressure. But some were successful", Alina scribbled furiously in her notebook, "I read that a diving bell salvaged cannons from the Mary Rose in 1836!" Siebe nodded. "Indeed! But divers needed more freedom!"

'A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn,' as William Osler said," he remarked thoughtfully. "I realized that safety required a constant supply of fresh air."

Siebe pointed to a man being lowered into the water in his new suit. "That's Mr. Taylor, our bravest volunteer! The air pump keeps the water out, and he can even signal us!" Suddenly, Taylor tugged frantically on the rope. "Trouble!" Siebe shouted. "The air hose is snagged! He's running out of air!" Alina gasped. 'I remember reading that early diving suits needed weights to stay submerged. Maybe we can use that to pull the hose free!"

Siebe quickly grabbed a rope attached to a heavy weight and tossed it into the water near the hose. The weight snagged the hose, pulling it free.

"You saved him!" Alina exclaimed, her eyes shining. "Knowledge is power," Siebe smiled, "and observation is key! Now, off you go; I suspect your book is calling you home."

"And today, the diving equipment and services industry has grown to be worth over 4 billion dollars!" she shared excitedly. Astrid grinned. "So, you're thinking about designing a better underwater drone now?" Alina nodded, already sketching ideas. "To be continued!"
