Daphnis and Chloe
Two young shepherds, their innocent love, and the seasons of their lives

Page 1

In a sacred grove of the Nymphs, near the town of Mytilene, two shepherds made wondrous discoveries. First, Lamon, tending his master’s flocks, found a baby boy nestled amongst the reeds, suckled by a ewe. The child was wrapped in purple swaddling clothes and adorned with a golden brooch, hinting at a noble birth. Lamon took the child home to his wife, Myrtale, and they named him Daphnis. Not long after, Dryas, a goat-herd, discovered a baby girl near a flowing spring, nursed by a nanny goat. She too was wrapped in fine garments and wore precious anklets. Dryas brought her home to his wife, Napa, and they called her Chloe. Both infants carried tokens of a hidden, wealthy lineage, but the humble shepherds resolved to raise them as their own, in innocence and the simple ways of the fields, believing them gifts from the gods.

Daphnis and Chloe grew up together, as beautiful as the gods of the fields, their lives intertwined from earliest memory. Daphnis, strong and graceful, with sun-kissed skin and dark curly hair, tended his master's sheep across the verdant hills. Chloe, fair and gentle, with flowing golden hair, guarded her father's goats near the bubbling springs. Their days were spent under the bright sun, sharing simple meals of cheese and fruit, playing melodies on reed pipes, and weaving garlands of fragrant wildflowers for each other's hair. They knew no other world than their flocks and the rolling green hills, believing themselves true children of the earth. But as the seasons turned, a new, perplexing feeling began to stir within them, a warmth and a longing they did not understand, a joy in each other's presence that made all other things seem dim. They were children of nature, learning of love before they truly knew its name or its power.

One day, a very old and wise shepherd named Philetas, bent with age but keen of mind and famed for his stories, found Daphnis and Chloe troubled by their new, confusing feelings. He invited them to his blossoming orchard, where the air was sweet with the perfume of countless flowers and buzzing bees. Philetas, seeing their innocent confusion, recounted tales of the mischievous god Eros, who brings both intoxicating joy and tender pain. He spoke of a mysterious sweetness that fills the heart, a fluttering sensation in the chest, and an insistent longing that made one think only of the beloved, wishing to be ever near them. He gently explained that only a kiss and a gentle embrace, given with true affection, could truly soothe the restlessness that love brings. His words, delivered with a serene smile, began to open their eyes to the true nature of their own burgeoning affection, giving a name to their nameless desires.

The tranquil peace of their pastoral lives was abruptly shattered by unexpected dangers from the sea. Tyrian pirates, fierce and opportunistic, landed their ship on the rugged, rocky coast, causing widespread alarm amongst the scattered shepherds tending their flocks. They quickly plundered the land, seizing goods and driving away valuable cattle, creating widespread panic. In the ensuing confusion and terror, they seized Daphnis, dragging him aboard their ship with cruel efficiency. Chloe watched in utter horror from a hidden vantage point, her heart seized with terror as the vessel sailed away, carrying her beloved Daphnis into the unknown. Despair filled her, a cold emptiness. But as if by divine intervention, the ship soon struck a hidden reef far too close to the shore, causing it to run aground and become disabled. In the ensuing chaos, Daphnis, with a desperate surge of strength, was able to escape and swim back to safety, returning to Chloe's tearful, frantic embrace, a miraculous reunion that reaffirmed their bond.

As the vibrant colours of autumn faded into a cold, damp winter, Daphnis and Chloe, along with their adoptive parents, Lamon and Dryas, were compelled to leave the open pastures and retreat to the warmth and shelter of Lamon's farmhouse. The days were short, and the nights long and dark, spent gathered around the crackling, comforting hearth fire. Confined indoors by the chill, their intimacy deepened. They shared simple stories, worked on small, practical crafts like mending nets or weaving baskets, and simply sat together in companionable silence, their hands often finding each other in a tender, unconscious gesture. This period of quiet closeness, away from the endless distractions of the fields, solidified their unspoken love, making it grow stronger and more assured. The longing for spring, and for the freedom of the outdoors, mingled with a new appreciation for the profound warmth and comfort they found in each other’s constant, loving presence.

Spring returned, painting the hillsides green and calling the flocks back to the open pastures. But with the changing seasons came new, persistent dangers. Raiders from Methymna, a rival town, swept through the countryside with alarming frequency, causing widespread panic and stealing valuable animals. One day, they descended upon the tranquil village springs where Chloe was tending her beloved goats, enjoying the fresh water. As the raiders attempted to drive her flock away, their harsh shouts echoing through the quiet valley, Chloe, fueled by a fierce love for her animals and the pastoral life she cherished, bravely stood her ground. With remarkable courage, she placed herself between the raiders and her flock, attempting to defend them with desperate shouts and gestures. Though she could not ultimately prevent some losses, her courageous spirit shone brightly amidst the fear and confusion, a testament to her steadfast and protective nature, even as Daphnis rushed to her aid.

One warm afternoon, while tending his flocks in a secluded part of the hills, Daphnis was unexpectedly approached by Lykainion, a woman from the nearby city, who had ventured into the countryside. She was older and more worldly than any woman Daphnis had known in the fields, and she possessed a sophisticated charm. Observing Daphnis's innocent beauty and his clear, unwavering devotion to Chloe, Lykainion, with a knowing smile, decided to 'teach' him about the deeper, more complex mysteries of love and physical intimacy. She led him away from his flock to a particularly shaded and secluded olive grove, where the ancient trees offered a private refuge. However, Daphnis, pure of heart and utterly devoted only to Chloe, found himself profoundly confused and deeply uncomfortable by her overtures and advances. The 'lesson' felt alien and wrong without Chloe, and his heart remained stubbornly fixed on his true beloved. His innocence was preserved as he gently but firmly retreated, his mind filled only with Chloe's image and the pure affection they shared, longing only for her presence.

The lingering threats from the Methymnian raiders continued to plague the innocent countryside, casting a shadow over the shepherds' lives. One fateful day, as Chloe tended her goats near the winding river, enjoying the gentle current and the warmth of the sun, a new, ruthless band of raiders suddenly swooped down upon her. They seized her swiftly, overpowering her cries of alarm and resistance, and dragged her away towards their waiting ships, hidden further downstream. Daphnis, witnessing the horrifying scene from a distance across the fields, was struck with agonizing despair, a crushing sense of helplessness. He rushed frantically towards the river bank, his voice raw as he called her name, desperate to intervene, but it was too late. Chloe was gone, carried away by the merciless raiders, leaving Daphnis utterly alone and heartbroken, facing the unbearable reality of their brutal, sudden separation, his world shattered around him.

After many harrowing trials, desperate searches, and unexpected interventions from both mortals and gods, the long-hidden truth of Daphnis and Chloe's origins finally came to light. It was revealed that they were not humble shepherds' children, abandoned to fate, but the offspring of wealthy and noble citizens of Mytilene, lost to their families in infancy. Daphnis was discovered to be the beloved son of Dionysophanes, a prominent and highly respected figure in the city, identified by the golden brooch he wore as a baby. Chloe, too, was identified as the daughter of wealthy parents, identified by the precious tokens and anklets she had been found with. The grand courtyard of Dionysophanes' magnificent villa became the scene of joyous reunions and emotional declarations, as parents and children, long separated by the cruel hand of fate, at last recognized each other through their tokens and the undeniable pull of kinship. Preparations for a magnificent wedding, uniting these two noble souls, were immediately begun, promising an end to their trials.

Despite their newfound wealth and noble lineage, a world of grand villas and city life, Daphnis and Chloe, bound by their unwavering love for each other and for the simple, honest life they had always known, chose to return to the beloved pastures. Their wedding, a celebration of their enduring devotion, was not held in the magnificent city villa, but in the sacred Nymphs' Grove where their lives had miraculously begun, echoing their humble origins. Surrounded by their reunited families, both adoptive and biological, and the wise old shepherd Philetas, they joyfully pledged their eternal love and fidelity. They were finally united, their innocence matured into a deep and abiding devotion, their trials behind them. They lived happily, tending their flocks and sharing their days, their hearts forever rooted in the beautiful, sun-kissed lands where their extraordinary story unfolded, a timeless testament to the enduring power of love, fate, and the simple joys of the pastoral world.
