Each night, a magical Firebird, with feathers that blazed like embers, would fly into the garden and steal the King's precious apples, leaving only a faint, warm glow behind. The King grew weary of losing his treasure, seeing his golden apples vanish night after night, so he called his three sons and commanded them to guard the tree. The elder brothers, Dmitri and Vasily, guarded for two nights but always fell asleep, lulled by the quiet garden. On the third night, it was the youngest son, Ivan Tsarevich, who took watch, determined not to fail. He sat under the tree, hidden deep in the shadows of the fragrant bushes, waiting patiently for the thief. Just before dawn, the Firebird appeared, its feathers glowing like a thousand tiny fires as it swooped towards the tree.

His father, the King, had promised half his kingdom to the son who brought back the Firebird, spurring Ivan on with a sense of duty and hope. Ivan mounted his faithful horse and rode for many days through thick, ancient forests and over rolling, green hills, leaving the familiar comforts of his home far behind. One evening, as dusk settled, casting long shadows, he came upon a perplexing crossroads. In the middle stood a weathered stone, grey with age and thickly covered in moss and clinging vines. Carved deeply into its surface were three inscriptions, each pointing down a different, ominous path. One path led to a place where he would find great treasure but lose his own life. Another led to a place where his horse would surely die. The third path promised danger but also a chance at success, though it gave no guarantee. Ivan read each inscription carefully, weighing his choices.

Ivan Tsarevich, true to his word, took the path that led to his horse's demise. He rode for another long day, pressing onward through the ever-thickening woods, until he stopped to rest for the night in a quiet clearing. He tethered his horse and fell into a deep sleep, exhausted from his journey. When morning came, with the first light filtering through the trees, he awoke to find his beloved horse mysteriously gone.

There was no sign of a struggle, no broken branches or overturned earth, only an empty space in the dewy grass where his horse had been, with a fresh, clean trail leading away into the deep woods. As Ivan stood, wondering what to do and feeling a pang of sorrow, a great Grey Wolf suddenly appeared from the shadows of the forest, its powerful form emerging silently. Its eyes were keen and wise, holding an ancient knowing. The Wolf admitted to Ivan that it was responsible for his horse's vanishing, an act tied to the stone's prophecy. But then, to Ivan's surprise, the Wolf offered to help him on his quest, as a replacement for the lost horse, promising to carry him swiftly and safely to his destination.

The trees blurred past them like a wall, and the wind whipped through Ivan's hair as they covered vast distances in a short time. Soon, they arrived at the magnificent kingdom of King Dolmat, a place of grand architecture and bustling activity, where the elusive Firebird was kept. The Wolf instructed Ivan to go alone into the palace gardens, where the Firebird was held in a gleaming golden cage, but warned him specifically not to touch the cage itself, only to gently take the bird. Ivan, filled with eager anticipation and the memory of his father's command, crept silently into the palace courtyard. The Firebird glowed brightly within its cage, its fiery feathers illuminating the pavilion, a truly breathtaking sight to behold. He reached for the bird, his fingers trembling with excitement, but his hand, in his haste, brushed against the golden cage. Instantly, a loud bell rang out, echoing through the courtyard, and guards rushed forward from every corner to seize him. King Dolmat himself appeared, his face stern, and demanded a new treasure for Ivan's freedom and to make amends for his attempted theft.

Ivan Tsarevich returned to the Grey Wolf with the new, daunting task of acquiring the Golden-Maned Horse. The Wolf, though clearly annoyed by Ivan's repeated mistake and lack of caution, agreed to help once more, its loyalty unwavering. With incredible speed, they traveled across plains and mountains to the distant kingdom of King Afron. The Wolf gave Ivan careful, stern instructions this time: to enter the royal stables, take the magnificent Golden-Maned Horse, but on no account to touch the golden bridle that hung sparkling beside it. Ivan crept silently into the vast stables under the cover of night, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement. The Golden-Maned Horse shone like polished gold in its stall, its coat gleaming, a truly breathtaking sight. He reached for the horse, his hand steadying himself, but his fingers, just like before, grazed the ornate golden bridle hanging on the wall. Immediately, a loud, resonant clanging sound echoed through the stable, shattering the night's silence. Guards rushed in from all directions, their footsteps thundering, seizing Ivan. King Afron appeared, his face furious, demanding an even greater price for Ivan's freedom and the attempted theft.

They traveled with incredible speed to the distant kingdom of King Kusman, a realm known for its beauty and the fame of its princess. This time, the Grey Wolf knew it must act with utmost cunning. It transformed itself into a strikingly beautiful, golden-maned horse, a perfect replica of the one Ivan sought, and allowed itself to be 'captured' by King Kusman's eager men. The King, delighted with such a magnificent horse, prepared to exchange it for Princess Yelena, believing he had acquired a priceless treasure. Meanwhile, Ivan Tsarevich, hidden nearby amongst the palace gardens, caught his first glimpse of Princess Yelena the Beautiful. She stood gracefully on a grand, flower-laden balcony, her long golden hair shining like spun sunlight, her beauty truly beyond compare. He felt a deep longing to be with her, not just for the quest, but a true and heartfelt love began to blossom in his heart.

Ivan Tsarevich then swiftly took Princess Yelena and rode away on the back of the Grey Wolf, their escape smooth and swift. After traveling a short distance from King Kusman's kingdom, the Wolf stopped in a peaceful, secluded meadow beside a gentle, winding river. Here, the Wolf suggested that Ivan hide Princess Yelena in a safe spot among the tall, fragrant grasses, keeping her out of sight. The Wolf then quickly transformed itself once more, this time into a shimmering Firebird, its feathers glowing with magical light, and flew back to King Afron's palace. There, it allowed itself to be caught and exchanged for the real Golden-Maned Horse. The actual Firebird, which King Afron still possessed, was then taken by the Wolf as it cunningly rejoined Ivan and Yelena. The Wolf then transformed back into its natural self, its grey fur gleaming, and they set off again, now with all three priceless treasures secured.

They traveled swiftly, eager to reach home and present their treasures. But as they neared the borders of his familiar home, Ivan, filled with a desire to share his triumph, made an ill-fated request. He asked the Grey Wolf to rest for a while, as he wished to go ahead and show his hard-won treasures to his waiting brothers first. The Wolf, sensing a deep, lurking danger, warned him against it, its keen eyes holding a dark foreboding, but Ivan, perhaps too trusting, insisted. He carefully hid Princess Yelena and the treasures in a safe, secluded place and went to meet his brothers. Dmitri and Vasily, consumed by envy and overwhelming greed at the sight of Ivan's success, could not bear to see him honored. They ambushed him on a dark, quiet forest path, striking him down with a cruel blow, leaving him gravely wounded and still beside a fallen log, believing him to be dead. They then quickly took his hard-won treasures for themselves, their faces twisted with malice.

The Grey Wolf, feeling an increasingly strong sense of unease and a gnawing worry for Ivan, soon returned to the place where Ivan Tsarevich had gone to meet his brothers. To its horror, it found Ivan lying gravely injured and still on the forest path, his life flickering. With great sorrow, the Wolf immediately understood the treacherous act that had occurred. Knowing there was only one way to save its loyal friend, the Grey Wolf raced away with incredible speed, its powerful legs carrying it swiftly across the land, searching for the legendary Waters of Life and Death. After a tireless and desperate search, it found a desolate, rocky place, stark and barren, where two distinct springs flowed side by side: one with the clear Water of Life, and one with the murky Water of Death. The Wolf carefully collected some of each precious water in two small, distinct vials carried in its mouth. Returning to Ivan, it first sprinkled him with the Water of Death, which caused his grievous wounds to miraculously close, then with the life-giving Water of Life, which instantly brought him back to full health and strength, his eyes opening once more.
