In the frozen tundra at the edge of the world lived Elara, a young hunter's daughter, and her grandmother, a wise woman of the village. But the tundra held more than just snow and ice. A shadow stalked the edges of the forest, a wolf of immense size and cunning named Vorlag, whose hunger matched the endless winter. Elara's love for her grandmother and Vorlag's hunger will change the tundra forever.

"Elara, take this warm cloak to your grandmother," her mother said, handing her a crimson garment. "But beware the forest path. Winter has made it treacherous."
Elara clutched the cloak, its wool soft against her mittened hands. "I know the path, Mother. I've walked it a hundred times."
Her mother sighed, worry etched on her face. "Just remember, the forest holds more than trees."

As Elara entered the forest, the wind whispered through the pines like hushed voices. A raven landed on a branch above, its black eyes gleaming. 'What do you want?' Elara asked, though she knew the raven wouldn't answer. The forest always felt alive, watching, waiting.

A deep voice broke the silence. "Lost, little one?" A massive grey wolf, Vorlag, emerged from the trees, his breath misting in the cold air. He lowered his head. "The Greek storyteller Aesop once said, 'Beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing.' I am no sheep, child, only a lonely hunter." Elara froze, her hand instinctively reaching for the small knife at her belt.

\"I know the way to your grandmother's,\" Vorlag rumbled. \"I can show you a shorter path, one filled with beautiful flowers. The tundra roses are in full bloom.

They reached the cottage, silent and still.

Vorlag's voice came from the shadows.

Vorlag threw off the shawl, his eyes blazing. "I am the hunger of the tundra, child. The endless winter made flesh. She understood that. Now, you will too!" Elara lunged for her knife. "You will not take me!" She yelled.

Elara remembered her father's lessons – to respect and fear the forest, but never to be defeated by it. As the wolf lunged, she remembered what he told her. "Always aim for the eyes." She plunged her knife deep, and Vorlag howled in agony, staggering backward. The forest fell silent.

The winter still raged, but Elara was no longer afraid. She had faced the darkness and survived. She honored her grandmother's memory by continuing her work. She knew the forest held both beauty and danger. When spring finally came to the tundra, it was a warmer spring than anyone could remember.
