"Excuse me," Manu asked a gruff-looking sailor hauling a rope. "What year is it? And where are we?" The sailor squinted at him. "Year of our Lord 1750, lad!

And you're in London, the greatest port in the world! Now, out of the way, I have chronometers to deliver!" Manu's eyes widened. Chronometers? He scrambled to keep up with the sailor. "What are chronometers used for?"

The sailor stopped and wiped his brow. "Used for? Lad, they're worth more than their weight in gold! They are used to accurately measure longitude at sea, without it ships wreck! Without the chronometer, navigation relies on dead reckoning, which is wildly inaccurate! It's a gamble!" Manu scribbled furiously in his notebook. "So, before this, how did sailors know where they were going?" he inquired.

"They mostly didn't!" shouted a voice. An older woman, Elise, approached. "Many ships were lost at sea!" she said. "John Harrison changed that!
"They mostly didn't!" shouted a voice. An older woman, Elise, approached. "Many ships were lost at sea!" she said. "John Harrison changed that! The British government promised 20,000 — a king's ransom back then — to anyone who could create a clock accurate enough to determine a ship's longitude within half a degree after a voyage to the West Indies! That's why these chronometers are so important," she said. Manu's jaw dropped.

"That's amazing!" Manu exclaimed. "Where can I find this Mr. Harrison? I want to know how he made such an important device!" Elise smiled.

I hear he spent decades perfecting his designs. But be warned, some folks are not believers. As Leonardo da Vinci once said, 'Obstacles cannot crush me. Every obstacle yields to stern resolve.' Mr. Harrison possesses that resolve, and you will need it too, young man."

My H4 chronometer did the trick, winning the reward after a voyage to Barbados in 1761!" he said with pride.

Manu spent the rest of the afternoon with Harrison, learning about balance springs and temperature compensation. As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the workshop, Elise touched Manu's shoulder. "Time to go, Manu. We have learned much!" The room began to swirl around them, and Manu knew it was time to return home. He clutched his notebook, filled with notes and sketches, and smiled.
