Alexei sat on the steps of his family's music shop, watching the gears of the clockwork city spin. Laughter echoed from the automatons playing instruments in the square. "This city is incredible, isn't it?" Meera asked, joining him with a mug of hot cocoa. "I wonder how they know how much water we need to keep the gears turning?"

The title glowed: Invention Encyclopedia.

They landed with a thump in a muddy field. Rain poured down, soaking them instantly. "Ugh, I hate being wet!" Meera grumbled, wiping her face.

He pointed to a small, thatched-roof cottage in the distance. "Judging by the architecture, and the lack of any clockwork gears, I'd say 17th century Korea."

"Greetings!" Jang Yeong-sil called out in Korean, which magically translated in Alexei and Meera's ears. "I am Jang Yeong-sil, and this is my latest invention: an improved rain gauge! Knowing the amount of rainfall is critical for agriculture in the kingdom, ensuring we don't lose crops to droughts or flooding!" He gestured to the gauge. "It measures rainfall more accurately than anything before!"

What makes this superior is that all regions would use the same measured, calibrated gauge, allowing for accurate comparison and government resource distribution when needed! Before this, it was all guesswork which resulted in disasterous crop loss."

"Indeed! By 1441, my rain gauges were distributed throughout Korea, and helped the nation thrive! The rain guage system has been in use for 600 years since."

"If we didn't measure the rain, we couldn't keep the city running, and we wouldn't have any music or laughter!" Meera smiled. "Now that's something to think about!"
