The Jade Emperor called upon the venerable Buddha to quell Sun Wukong’s rebellion. Buddha appeared, calm and immense, offering Wukong a simple wager: if he could leap out of Buddha's palm, he would become the new ruler of Heaven. Wukong, confident in his legendary leaps, agreed and sprang away. He flew to the very edge of the universe, or so he thought, and marked his victory by writing his name on five great pillars.

But when he returned, he found the pillars were merely Buddha's fingers! Buddha gently lowered his hand, transforming it into the mighty Five Elements Mountain, trapping Wukong beneath it. For five hundred long years, the proud Monkey King remained imprisoned, unable to move, awaiting a chance for freedom and redemption.

However, they soon learned of a troublesome demon causing great havoc and distress among the villagers. This demon, a pig-like creature of immense strength, had forced himself upon a local family, demanding to marry their daughter and disrupting their quiet lives. Sun Wukong, ever eager for a challenge and ready to defend the innocent, ingeniously disguised himself to confront the creature directly. After a fierce and comical battle, filled with powerful blows and clever tricks, Wukong revealed the demon to be Zhu Bajie, or Pigsy, a former Marshal of Heaven who had been banished to Earth for his misdeeds. Pigsy, though often clumsy, greedy, and lazy, deep down yearned for redemption and a chance to return to the celestial realm. With Tripitaka’s gentle compassion and Wukong’s persistent persuasion, Pigsy reluctantly agreed to join the pilgrimage, promising to atone for his past deeds, though he often grumbled about the hard work and strict diet ahead.

From its intimidating depths emerged a fearsome river demon, Sha Wujing, or Sandy, a former celestial general who had been banished to Earth for a heavenly offense. He was a powerful and intimidating figure with a fierce demeanor. Sun Wukong and Pigsy bravely confronted him, but Sandy proved to be incredibly strong and difficult to defeat. It took Tripitaka's calm influence and a magical intervention from the compassionate Bodhisattva Guanyin to reveal Sandy's true nature and purpose. Realizing the chance for redemption, Sandy humbly agreed to join the group, becoming the third disciple. He swore his loyalty to Tripitaka, ready to carry the luggage and face any dangers the river or land might hold.

One of their greatest challenges was the Flaming Mountains, a vast range that glowed red hot and burned perpetually, making passage impossible. No ordinary fire could be quenched here. It was a place guarded by powerful demons who delighted in hindering travelers. Sun Wukong, remembering a past quarrel, knew the only way to cross was to borrow the magical Plantain Fan from Princess Iron Fan, a fierce and proud demoness. After much cleverness, trickery, and perseverance, including a spirited battle with the demoness, Sun Wukong finally secured the fan. With a mighty wave, the fan extinguished the flames, creating a safe passage for Tripitaka and his disciples. The journey, though fraught with trials, slowly drew them closer to their goal.
