"Ugh, I spilled grape juice on my shirt again!" River exclaimed, looking down at the dark purple stain. Her mom sighed, handing her a damp cloth. "It's like the juice is attracted to your clothes, sweetie!" Felix, River's friend who was over for a study session, chuckled. "Seriously, how does it always happen to you?"

River scrubbed at the stain, frowning. "It's like... the grape juice sticks to the fabric." Felix tilted his head. "Maybe it's like how oil and water don't mix?" River's mom chimed in, "That's a great thought, Felix. It relates to how things are made of molecules, some of which love water and others that hate it — that's what makes soap work!"

River's eyes widened. "Soap? You mean it's all about molecules?" Her mom nodded. "It's chemistry in action, River! Imagine a harbor town filled with ships sailing on a river of starlight. Now, picture yourself stepping back in time..." A shimmer filled the room, and the kitchen seemed to dissolve. A voice narrated, "Marseille, France, late 1700s. The air hangs heavy with the scent of lavender and sea salt..."

Amidst the chaos of the Marseille docks, a stern-faced man oversaw the soap-making process. "That's Nicolas Leblanc," the narrator said. "A brilliant chemist. He wanted to make soap cheaper for everyone! He won a prize from the King for his process to make soda ash from salt! But it was all taken from him during the Revolution later on, and he died in poverty.."

Leblanc wiped sweat from his brow, muttering to himself, "More soda ash is needed! How can I make it efficiently?" He paused, grabbing a piece of chalk and scribbling furiously on a nearby slate. "As Leonardo da Vinci said, 'Principles for the Development of a Complete Mind: Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses - especially learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else'. This salt must connect to the ash!"

Leblanc added the soda ash to a pot of oil and water, then pointed excitedly. "See! The oil breaks up into tiny droplets! The soda ash helps create soap molecules with one end that loves water and one that hates it. These molecules grab onto the oil and pull it into the water!" River scribbled furiously in her notebook. "So, it's like a tiny tug-of-war!"

The narrator explained, \"Leblanc's process made soap accessible to everyone, improving hygiene and public health! Soon after, scientists like Michel Eugène Chevreul learned to isolate fatty acids, which are key components of soap!\" \"Without Leblanc's soda ash, and other chemists, we'd have diseases spreading everywhere!

Suddenly, River, Felix, and her mom were back in the kitchen, the Victorian home surrounding them once more. River grinned, pointing at the grape juice stain. \"The soap molecules grab onto the stain and pull it into the water when we wash it!\" Felix exclaimed, \"Oh! So, that's why soap works better than just water! It gets the oily dirt, and that's why you have to wash your hands for 20 seconds!\" River's mom nodded.

"It's like when I'm doing gymnastics," River said, snapping her fingers. "The chalk helps my hands grip the bar – it absorbs the oily sweat, like soap grabs the dirt!" Felix added, "And think about washing dishes! Soap gets all the grease off the pans." River's mom smiled. "Exactly! Soap is everywhere and essential in our daily lives."

River smiled, writing in her notebook, "Soap molecules have one end that loves water and one that hates it, so they grab onto dirt and wash it away!" Felix looked thoughtful. "That's cool! But what about bleach? How does that get rid of stains, like if you spilled grape juice on a white shirt instead?"
