In the bustling science lab at Everett Middle School, a huge model of the solar system hung from the ceiling. Eloise pointed up at a fuzzy, streaking object orbiting near Jupiter. "Mr. Harris, what's that weird, icy-looking thing with the long tail?" Her friend Maya squinted, adjusting her glasses. "It looks like a cosmic snowball that's melting!"

Mr. Harris smiled, grabbing a small, lumpy rock from his desk. "That, Eloise, is a comet, and Maya, you're not far off! Scientists call them 'dirty snowballs' because they're mixtures of ice, rock, and dust left over from when the planets were born." He tapped the rock. "The big mystery was always what was inside them—they're like frozen puzzle boxes from the dawn of time."

Eloise imagined the scientists trying to solve that puzzle. "So how could you ever open a puzzle box that's millions of miles away?" she asked. Mr. Harris's eyes twinkled as the classroom lights seemed to dim, shifting to the high-tech gleam of a mission control room. "With a brilliant plan, a decade-long journey, and a space robot named Rosetta."

"The European Space Agency launched the Rosetta mission in 2004," Mr. Harris's voice narrated, as Eloise watched the team on the screen. "Their goal was audacious: to chase a comet, orbit it, and for the first time in history, land a probe on its surface. For ten years, the spacecraft flew through the solar system, preparing for its big moment."

Eloise saw the scientists huddled together, their faces a mix of hope and anxiety. She leaned forward, whispering to herself, "It's like the astronomer Carl Sagan said, 'Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.'" The lead scientist pointed at a blinking light on the main screen. "Philae lander separation confirmed! Ten years of work comes down to the next seven hours."

But the landing was terrifyingly dramatic. "The harpoons designed to anchor it to the comet didn't fire!" a scientist shouted. The little lander, named Philae, hit the surface and bounced twice before finally coming to a stop somewhere unexpected. For hours, a mysterious, weak signal was all they received, a faint whisper from across the solar system.

Before its batteries died, Philae sent back incredible data. "They found it!" Mr. Harris exclaimed excitedly. "Philae detected complex organic molecules, including glycine—an amino acid!" Eloise gasped. "You mean one of the building blocks for life was hiding on that frozen rock all along?"

The scene faded back to the bright classroom at Everett Middle. "So the mysterious signal was because Philae landed in the shadow of a cliff," Eloise explained to Maya and Sam, pointing to a diagram on the smartboard. "Its solar panels couldn't recharge! That puzzle box was stuck in the dark." Sam snapped his fingers. "Oh! So that's why they lost contact!"

"It's like sending a deep-sea drone to explore the Mariana Trench," Maya suggested, sketching in her notebook. "You have to solve problems from millions of miles away using only data." Sam added, "Or like trying to fix your Wi-Fi router by just listening to the beeps it makes! You have to piece together tiny clues to see the big picture."

Eloise looked out the window at the setting sun over the hills of San Francisco. "So comets are like frozen time capsules from the very beginning of our solar system," she summarized thoughtfully. Maya gazed out the window with her. "If comets came from the edge of the solar system, what's happening at the very center, inside our Sun?"
