The meteor shower carnival was in full swing, lights twinkling brighter than the falling stars. Farah, clutching a half-eaten corn dog, pointed at a peculiar tent. "What's that one, Dad?" she asked, craning her neck to read the sign: 'Professor Finch's Amazing Animal Adaptations!'

"Adaptations, huh?" Farah's dad chuckled, adjusting his glasses. "Remember how Mr. Harris was saying that animals change over time to survive?" Tendai, a friend with curly golden-brown hair, joined them, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Like how arctic foxes have white fur to blend in with the snow? Is that what animal adaptations are all about?"

Suddenly, the scene dissolved into a haze of sand and wind. Camels swayed slowly in the background. A voice narrated, "Egypt, 1800s. Amidst the harsh desert landscape..."

A tall, thin man with neatly trimmed black hair stood beside a dromedary. "Meet Al-Jahiz," the voice continued, "a scholar from Basra. In his 'Book of Animals,' he described the ways animals adapt to their environments. He was truly ahead of his time!"

Al-Jahiz sat beneath a palm tree, observing a lizard darting across the sand. He muttered to himself, "'Animals engage in a struggle for existence and survival,' just like Aristotle said. How do they manage to thrive in such harsh conditions?"

He noticed how the lizard's scales blended perfectly with the sand, camouflaging it from predators. Al-Jahiz also wrote about how some birds migrate to warmer climates, thus adapting to the changing seasons. It was like he unlocked a secret code of nature!

Al-Jahiz's observations laid the foundation for understanding evolution. He helped people understand that creatures aren't fixed; they evolved. This made people rethink the way we view life and survival on Earth.

The carnival reappeared! Farah's eyes widened. "So, Al-Jahiz figured out that animals change to survive?" Theo, a friend with medium-length straight blonde hair, jumped in: "Like how giraffes have long necks to reach high leaves, right?" Her dad nodded. "Exactly! It's all about adapting to the environment to stay alive."

"And it's not just physical!" Farah exclaimed. "Remember how Professor Finch said some animals learn new behaviors?" Tendai added, "Like crows using tools to get food!" Theo smiled. "Or those birds that mimic human voices! That's pretty amazing adaptation."

"So, animal adaptations are just how animals change to survive?" Farah summarized, writing in her notebook. Theo, looking up at the meteor shower, asked, "If animals adapt to survive on Earth...could they adapt to live on other planets?"
